Veil-Less Looks

Maybe your wedding is more casual, maybe your bridal up-do is going to be a hair masterpiece, maybe the idea of a piece of gausy fabric hanging off your hair weirds you out. Regardless of your reasoning, here are some hairstyles that would look great - and still bridal - without a veil.

Headbands:
Great for short hair especially! Since brides-to-be sometimes have trouble being creative with their cropped locks, a headband is an excellent solution. And of course, you can use a headband to dress up just about any hairstyle.

{image}
Cute!

Flowers:
Adorning your 'do with fresh flowers is oh-so-chic, don't you think? I just love the relaxed, beach-y look below.

{image}

A gardenia is also a classic, gorgeous flower many brides use. This bride's style is gorgeous, especially with her blue-hued dress.

{image}

Plus, gardenias are so fragrant that your groom will always remember the way you smelled when he kissed you on your wedding day. Now is that romantic or what?

Tiaras:
Want to guarantee that you'll feel like a princess on your wedding day? Wear a tiara!

{image}

Like the headband, this can be integrated into practically any hair style, and can be worn alone or in addition to a veil.

Also, be sure to check out another Bustle Event blog post on hair accessories for more ideas.

Let's Talk Veils

Hello, readers! It's been a while since my last post - almost a month! Now that I'm back from my summer blogging vacation, I'm getting down to business. Time to talk about veil trends for 2010-2011! There are so many styles out there and I love how each one can really set off whatever particular look you want to achieve.

Let's start off with my personal favorite, the birdcage veil.

{image}

This veil can be worn with practically any dress style, from vintage to modern. It's best to wear your birdcage veil with a low up-do, but as long as you have a talented hair stylist anything is possible. I love this look anchored with a jeweled hair clip or dramatic feathered hair accessory. You could even wear it with a vintage-inspired hat! I'm in love.

If you want to go for a traditional mid-length veil, you should look for a veil between 20 and 30 inches in length... in other words, anywhere from your shoulders to your fingertips. What length you choose can depend on anything from your height to your dress style. Since these veils can be worn in a variety of ways (high on the head, low on the head, over the shoulders, etc.), many veils come with embroidered edges. So pretty!

{image}

Next let's discuss long veils. There are two main types: Cathedral length veils are are typically floor length, and Regal length veils are around 10-12 feet, or even longer. (Note: I've found some variation on the names of these veils, but you get the idea.) This style veil is oh-so-elegant and great if you want to heighten the romantic look of your dress.

As you can see from this image, courtesy of Scarlett Lillian Photography, a these looong veils can really add some drama to your wedding day - in a good way! They are best worn with a dress that has a train, and make sure you have a plan for how you want to look at your wedding reception, since long veils can get in the way of dancing and all the other wedding activities you'll be doing.

Short, architectural veils are an interesting trend and the styling is across the board from traditional like this:

...to an Avant-garde look, like this:

Often called "bubble veils," this style isn't for the faint of heart, but I love how even a small bubble veil adds some oomph to any look.

What about you, readers? Did I leave out your favorite veil style? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned for a future post on veil-less bridal looks.

Diamonds: They Never Go Out Of Style

Ok, time to talk diamonds. Specifically, diamond engagement rings. There are so many options available I can barely keep them straight! And not that there's anything wrong with the ever-classy diamond solitaire, but here are several rather unique designs showing off the latest trends.

This ring, found on the Style Me Pretty website, is called a "split shank" engagement ring. I read somewhere that the split band helps to emphasize the center stone. Added bonus - more surface area to cover in diamonds!

This gorgeous ring (and stellar photography) are from Lemongrass Photography's Facebook page. A circle of smaller diamonds encircling a larger center stone has been popular for a long time, and this ring in particular shows a modern take on that classic style.

Here's a ring you don't see every day:

A diamond in a setting like this doesn't have to be insanely large to look beautiful and draw attention. Especially in times like these when we're all pinching our pennies, antique and vintage rings can be more affordable, and have charm and character all their own.

Below is a second vintage ring I found, showing another of today's trends:

This art-deco style ring has an elaborate, highly structured setting... architectural, one might say. Again, this is one of those designs that draws attention to the center stone. Lovely.

Prepare yourself for this last one; it just might blow you away:

This humongous yellow diamond is probably something only Carrie Underwood can buy. Although they aren't for the faint of heart (or wallet), colored diamonds are sure-fire show stoppers.

All of these rings are insanely beautiful, don't you think?! Did I leave any trends out? Tell us in the comments.

Wedding Guest: What I'm Wearing

I'm going to a high school friend's wedding this weekend, and I've been in search of the perfect spring frock for a while now. The good news is, I've found it! Even better news - I'm wearing it to the wedding! Ta da!

There's something about this dress that makes me want to get up and dance. Perhaps it's the flirty skirt. And call me crazy, but wouldn't this make a fun bridesmaid dress? I've been to a few weddings where the bridesmaids are wearing patterned dresses - sometimes matching, sometimes not - and I think it's a fun idea.

For a handbag, I'm going with this purple clutch from Target.
Not only is it under $20, but it's understated enough that it won't take attention away from my dress.

And for the shoe, I'm wearing something pretty and practical.

I know this isn't the most daring shoe you've ever seen, but I've been wanting a nude pump to wear to work, and this wedding helped justify my purchase. I toyed with the idea of getting these from J.Crew...

...but decided I didn't NEED them. But now that I think about it, these would be amazing with a floaty, romantic wedding gown, right?

Okay, I might be getting ahead of myself. Back to my main point - I'm thrilled to wear my adorable flowered dress, but what excites me even more is that my dear friend Sarah is marrying the love of her life! Congratulations, Sarah and Bob!

These days, couples are choosing all sorts of thing to top their wedding cakes. From bride and groom figurines to monograms, flowers to tiny plastic animals wearing wedding day finery, the possibilities are practically endless. Are you more traditional when it comes to cake toppers, or would you rather go the creative route?

Check out these adorable tiny birds, found on Etsy:

So cute, right?

Or here's something more traditional, but still with personality.

How romantic!

If you want to use your last initial or a monogram, there are tons of options out there.

Or, would you rather have a humorous cake topper?

There really is no end to what you might put on top of your wedding cake. If you've used something unique to top your cake, let us know in the comments!

Handbags for that special event

Regardless if you're a bride, bridesmaid, or a guest of a wedding or event, one thing's for sure - you need the perfect handbag to hold your M.I.L.K. (money, ID, lipstick, keys). I'm suggesting a few that would be perfect for just about any occasion.

This flower-embellished handbag from Lulu Townsend is adorable, and only $30 at DSW! This would be perfect for a bride or bridesmaid, especially for a spring wedding.

Check out this incredibly girly, ruffled clutch from Nordstrom.
I love how the layers of ruffles play off each other to create a very feminine look.

And, here's one last glamorous in-my-dreams jewel box clutch found on Net-a-porter.Most people's wedding dresses cost a fraction of the price of this clutch, but still, I couldn't resist including it in this post!!

Styling an 'Old Hollywood' Wedding

Getting married, and need a little inspiration? Bustle Event Design is here to help. At least once a month, we're going to discuss an inspiration or theme for a wedding or event, and offer some ideas to help you with the details. First up: an "old hollywood" themed wedding.

The dress: Here's an incredibly glamorous dress from designer Elizabeth Fillmore.

The draped neckline is beautiful, the silhouette is sexy without being overbearingly so, and the ruffles down the back of the dress give it just the right amount of romance. Add some chandelier earrings, red lipstick, and you're set.

The hair: Charlize Theron's Hollywood waves would be an excellent complement to a dress like the one shown above. InStyle.com even gives you the how-to! If you've got longer hair, gentle waves and a faux bob might be a perfect 'do.

Color scheme: First find something to use as an inspiration piece. For an "old Hollywood" theme, keep it simple and classic. If you're stuck, browse around a fabric store and ask for swatches of fabrics you like. Black and white with hints of red, silver, or gold can create plenty of drama if executed correctly.
Other details: Deep red roses, white gardenias, or calla lilies would be an excellent bouquet choice for both you and your bridesmaids. For centerpieces, something structural would not only save you money, but they'd also give your reception some extra glam. Check out this amazing tableware from Juliska:

You could copy this look on the cheap, using old tableware found at yard sales and spray-painting them black. Adding white candles would look lovely, or filling the different-sized bowls with decorative mirrored balls would be fun too. Then, with your wedding guests dressed to the nines and sipping champagne, your wedding and reception will get rave reviews!

Keeping Warm at Your Winter Wedding

If you're a winter bride, one dilemma you may be facing is how to keep warm in a stylish way, while not compromising your dream dress. Here are some options for staying warm and chic at the same time.

This lovely cape from House of Brides is adorable.
Your dress still shows beneath it and as a bonus, it's super easy to put on and take off.

Here is a mink jacket by designer Amanda Wakeley that is just gorgeous.
While a bit more revealing than the first option, this high quality cropped jacket would definitely put you in the spotlight.

Take a look at this amazing full-length coat from Vera Wang.

This designer look is obviously quite expensive, I can't help but imagine how elegant it would look, both indoors and out.

All of these looks are so great, you might find yourself wanting to keep them on, even when you get inside!

The Hair Up There

In case you haven't noticed, headbands and unique hair accessories are becoming more and more popular these days - especially for weddings. Instead of a traditional veil, do you think you would go for a jeweled headband? Check out this delicate jeweled headband from Haute Bride.

I like it because it's got just the right amount of sparkle.

Maybe you're having an outdoor ceremony and want your hairstyle to play along? Consider this lovely hair clip from Anthropologie.

And of course, real flowers are always a good option too!

Men's Engagement Rings: To Do or Not To Do?

A recent article in the New York Daily News (source) discusses the trend of “mangagement” rings, meaning women buying their fiancés engagement rings. Whether or not it’s for you and your fiancé, it’s an interesting idea, don’t you think? Check this one out:

(source)
You can tell it’s an engagement ring, but there’s a certain tailored masculinity to it that makes it very unlike a typical women’s engagement ring.

On the other hand, Chris Easter, Co-Founder of TheManRegistry.com says don’t believe the hype when it comes to men’s engagement rings (source).

So readers, what do you think? Should this one be left alone? Or it is time to change the tradition and buy your man some bling?

Finishing Touches

On your big day, of course you want to look your best, down to the very last detail. And what would your wedding day be without a little frosting? No, not the kind on the cake – although that’s important too – we mean the kind you wear. That’s right… jewelry!

Looking for some bling on a budget? This necklace and earring set will give you plenty of sparkle without the hole in your wallet.
(source)
The vintage-inspired design would perfectly complement a strapless gown.

Or, check out this stylish gold heart from jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer.
(source)
Even though this necklace in particular is pricey, with a little shopping you could replicate this delicate gold necklace for a fraction of the price. It’s perfect if you’re going for an understated look with your jewelry and don’t want to distract from your dress or hair.

If you’re getting married on the beach, this seashell charm would look gorgeous on a fine silver chain.
(source)
Something like this could easily transfer into everyday wear and would be a sweet reminder of your beautiful wedding day.

Even though all the jewelry options out there might seem overwhelming, think about jewelry as one more way to let your personality shine through. Then pick something that makes you feel like you.

Thinking Outside the Book

Are you looking for wedding guestbook ideas that are more you than the usual cream-colored book with lined pages inside? Well, here are a few tips on ways to make your guestbook into something more than just a book on a shelf.

A simple and popular idea is to frame a great photo of the two of you, give it a large mat and a beautiful frame, and have guests sign the mat. Ta-da – instant and meaningful artwork!

If you’re wondering how to announce your marriage to far-flung friends and family, consider creating a postcard guest book. Collect postcards from places that hold meaning for both you and your significant other – the city where you get married, your hometowns, your favorite vacation spot – then create a small package that you send to friends and family. Include a postcard, stamped and self-addressed, along with a note announcing your marriage and ask them to mail you their well wishes. When you get the postcards back, put the cards in a photo album or take them to a local copy store and have a custom album created.

(Source)

One couple we know, Lindsay and Eric, were looking for a guestbook idea when they came across the window frame from Lindsay’s grandparents’ old house. They put a mirror behind it, and had guests sign the mirror with Sharpie markers. How cool is that?!

(Source: author's collection)

There are no rules when it comes to choosing how you want your guests to mark their presence at your reception. Our suggestion - make it your own, and have fun!

Sweet Wedding Hair

When I saw this picture over on WeddingBeePro's blog about "Lovely Hair", I just had to share:

I love how her hair is softly wavy and tied up in a simple, sweet bow. And it's not "perfect" - see the bumps?? I think this adds to the prettiness of the hairdo. This style would be so fitting for a casual outdoor picnic or beach wedding. Or even for a formal wedding - I'm not a huge fan of saying "this style is perfect for this, but not that" - it's your wedding and if you want to wear this style to a formal wedding, then DO IT!

Here are some other related styles that I love (all found on Brides.com's hair style picture gallery):

I love this bride's curly, wispy hair - and her fabulous double-stranded headband. You can find a similar hair accessory over on the Handmade Lovelies Etsy shop!

Again, I ADORE these loose waves! If only my hair would stay curled, I could one day achieve this look... but for those of you whose hair does hold a curl - this would be a super-sweet wedding hair style and I'm insanely jealous that you have the option to wear your hair like this. :)
Here's one more for all of you short-hair brides:

How great is that fascinator?! What a perfect hair accessory.

Handmade Lovelies

It's official - I am insane over hair accessories! TR could have proposed with a fabulous hair clip and I would have happily worn it everyday for the rest of my life. In fact, here's some dialogue I just dreamt up for this scenario:

Person: Why do you wear that in your hair everyday?

Me (nonchalantly waving my hand towards my head): Oh, it's my engagement hair flower and it's my wifely duty to incorporate it into my hairstyle daily. I only take it off when sleeping & showering. It proves I'm married.

I know, I'm strange. :)

Anyways, the real purpose of this post is to showcase a great little Etsy shop called Handmade Lovelies, which sells these gorgeous, whimisical hair accessories created by the fabulous Lauren of openField Photography! Please go check it out!!

Breakfast at Tiffany's

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending Tiffany & Co's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" event. It was an intimate gathering of guests who were interested in learning more about the 4 C's ~ cut, color, carat & clarity... plus Tiffany's own definition of "presence".

My friends Ashley & Allison and I arrived at the store while the rest of the mall was still closed, we were greeted by a Tiffany employee, ushered inside the store to dine on some fine pastries & juice, listened to a non-boring explanation of Tiffany's history (did you know Tiffany's was in business when Abraham Lincoln was president??) & then were allowed to try on the most GORGEOUS baubles in the engagement ring case!

Here's one I really liked (and probably the ONLY one I could hope of getting in the near future - $4k):

{Tiffany Three Stone Circlet}

We learned about the "Tiffany setting", the company's strict diamond standards (any diamond with a black inclusion, chip, laser drill hole or surface inclusion is rejected), and the precision cut to maximize the diamonds brilliance. Here's the classic Tiffany ring:

{The Tiffany Setting}

Unfortunately, I was not allowed to take pictures while inside the store, so here are some of us after we left the event:

{Me - showing off my gift bag... it was full of Tiffany catalogs & even a sample of Tiffany perfume!}

{My fabulous girlfriends Ashley & Allison!}
